The art of illustrating the past isn’t just about referencing old photos. It’s about taking the time to truly understand; To create something new through storytelling.

Join local illustrator and museum professional, Nancy Nickolson, as she shares her journey creating artwork that connects people to the past. She’ll reveal the meticulous process behind her work, including how she created a detailed historic Edmonton map for modern eyes. Come hear her story and get a chance to see her original paintings up close!

Nancy Nickolson (she/they) is an artist living and creating on Treaty 6 territory in Amiskwaciwâskahikan (Edmonton). She is a descendant of Ukrainian, German, and French settlers.

Nancy’s art is a whimsical ode to life in this place we call Alberta. In her work she paints everything from roadside attractions, gardening, to perogy-making, exploring themes of place, identity, and nostalgia. She loves to make artwork that captures fleeting pieces of intangible heritage – like the making of a family recipe or learning a skill from a grandparent.

Nancy earned her Bachelor of Fine Art in Art and Design from the University of Alberta and a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Heritage Resources Management from Athabasca University. She has been a heritage professional for 17 years, working in several museums and historic sites with a focus on developing unique programs and experiences.

She has illustrated for many exciting projects, including the children’s book, Alphabet Stage. In 2022, her How to Perogy recipe guide received national acclaim as she raised funds for humanitarian aid in Ukraine. In 2023 she created an ambitious historic Walterdale map for the City of Edmonton’s John Walter Museum, meticulously hand-painting all the elements. Her artwork is on permanent public display at the U of A and can be found in private collections around the world.
