Speaker: Dr. Sarah Carter – Henry Marshall Tory Chair in the Department of History and Classics; University of Alberta

Highlighting the key Edmonton individuals and their organizations who worked for Alberta’s 1916 Equal Suffrage Bill, this talk draws on a new book by Sarah Carter, Ours by Every Law of Right and Justice: Women and the Vote in the Prairie Provinces (2020). A surprising number of diverse and colourful characters emerged during the years of struggle to achieve this goal, though far from all Albertans could vote after 1916. “Equality” was for some only.
