Speaker Series Recap – A Mystery from Norway

On Tuesday, October 27th, long-time EDHS board member Christine Prokop presented our Speaker Series offering, “A Mystery from Norway.”

The mystery started with an email to EDHS in 2019 from Victor Iversen, a gentleman in Norway, that included a photo of a small town streetscape. Victor was hoping to confirm family lore that his grandmother, Agnes Olava Ingebretsen, whom he never knew, had come to Canada as a young woman in 1920. The town photo featured a building with a sign saying, “Edmonton City Dairy.” It was the only clue that Agnes had indeed come to this part of the world.

Christine had the job of responding to EDHS emails. This simple inquiry sent her on a research adventure to the Provincial Archives of Alberta, through online documents and history books, and even on a road trip to the village of Hughenden – the town in the photo and, as it turned out, Agnes’s destination in Canada. Christine found the quest thrilling, and Victor was grateful to fill in an important part of his grandmother’s story.

Once again we were able to present our Speaker Series presentation in person in the large hall at the Old Timers Cabin (where we ensured physical distancing), and online via Zoom. Because in-person attendance numbers are limited, pre-registration is required.
